International Course on Laboratory Animal Science IV, BSRC Al. Fleming, Athens, Greece. 4-15/10, 2010.A two-week intensive course on laboratory animal science will be organized at the B.S.R.C Alexander Fleming–Vari, Greece in October 2010. The objective of this course is to present basic facts and principles that are essential for the humane use and care of animals and for the quality of research. The contents of the course are in line with recommendations of the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) regarding the training of the young scientists whose research involves the use of vertebrate animals. The mouse facility of the Biomedical Sciences Research Center “Al. Fleming” provides husbandry of animals and services to the biomedical research community since 2001. It covers an area of approximately 600 m2 within the premises of B.S.R.C. “Al. Fleming” and is equipped with highly automated systems that provide the best possible conditions for mouse reproduction and maintenance. There is a capacity to house more than 18,000 mice and is the largest mouse unit currently in Greece in terms of number and variety of mice.

The main activity is the reproduction and maintenance of mice stocks either of inbred strains or genetically engineered mice, such as transgenic and knockout mouse lines, or even chemically-induced mutants, which have been developed by the researchers of B.S.R.C. “Al. Fleming”.

 

GREEK INITIATIVE IN LABORATORY ANIMAL SCIENCE TRAINING

 Thirty-five delegates from Greece, other European countries and Asia participated in the second intensive two week training course in laboratory animal science at the Alexander Fleming Research Centre, Vari, Greece. The course, which is a joint venture between the University of Utrecht and The Alexander Fleming Research Centre, meets with the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations, (FELASA) category C requirements.

With the focus on laboratory rodents, the course included seminars, lectures and practical training on European legislation, ethics of research, experimental techniques pathology and research paper preparation The training was delivered in English by both expert in-house lecturers and visiting lecturers from other European countries and the USA. Further courses are planned yearly. More Info
